Are you searching for your next brush pen? In this review we look at the Zebra Funwari Brush Pen which features a super fine brush tip. These brush pens can be used for bullet journaling or any fun hand lettering project.
Zebra Funwari Brush Pen Review: Are they worth it?
Zebra offers a nice range of pens and markers that are great for hand lettering and bullet journaling. The Zebra Funwari Brush pen is a nice addition to their line of brush pens.
Features:
Size – Small brush pen: The Zebra Funwari has a super fine brush tip that makes it easy to write small and still get the effect of brush lettering with thick and thin strokes.

Water-based ink: These pens are made from water based dye ink which means they can be used with watercolor technique.
Colors:
One limitation of the Zebra Funwari brush pen is there are only 8 colors. If you love color then you will definitely feel limited by this color palette. Sometimes having less is more. I definitely recommend these brush pens for beginners and you won’t get sucked into the feeling of “I need to buy them all” because there are only 8 colors.
Available Colors: Pink, Red, Golden Yellow (looks Orange), Green, Light Blue, Purple, Gray and Black
Where can I buy the Zebra Funwari Brush Pens?
I found the 6 pack of colors at my local Joann’s store, but I can’t seem to find the same pack on Amazon. Instead you can get this bundle which includes 6 Zebra Mildliner Highlighters in addition to the 6 Zebra Funwari color brush pens. Amazon doesn’t sell all 8 colors as one set, but if you get the colored pack you can find the black and gray on Jetpens.

Here is a color swatch sample of the 6 colors: Red, Golden Yellow (I wrote Orange), Green, Light Blue, Purple and Pink
Is the Zebra Funwari Brush Pen good for beginners?
I would definitely recommend this brush pen for beginners. You really can’t go wrong with most small brush pens because of their small size they are easier to control than a large brush pen. As a beginner it is much harder to control a large brush pen therefore a small brush pen is best when first learning how to do brush lettering.
The brush tip is firm, but it still allows a good variance between thick and thin strokes. The more firm a tip is the easier it is to do a thin upstroke.

How to store your Zebra Funwari brush pen?
Since this is a water based pen you can store it horizontal or vertically. For more information on how to store brush pens check out our post here.
Best paper to use with your brush pens
When using your brush pens make sure you are using smooth paper. Non smooth paper can wear on your brush tip which can eventually lead to fraying. Our top recommendation for practice paper is HP Premium 32 paper. If you want something more heavy duty for your end product designs then consider Bristol paper. Check our our full guide of the best paper for brush pens.
Best alternatives
If you are still unsure if the Zebra Funwari brush pen is right for you then consider some of these alternatives.
Pentel Arts Sign Touch Brush Pen
The Pentel Sign Touch Brush Pen is a small brush pen that is also water based like the Funwari brush pen. It comes in 24 colors which is way more than the Zebra Funwari brush pen. You can easily find the primary pack of 12 on Amazon which consists of black, red, blue, green, brown, orange, yellow, gray, pink, sky blue, violet and yellow ochre. Other Zebra Brush Pens
Zebra also has a number of other brush pens to choose from.
Zebra Fude Sign Brush Pen
The Zebra Fude Sign brush pen only comes in black and features 3 different sizes: super fine, fine, and medium.
The size of the Zebra Funwari brush pen and the Zebra Fude Sign super fine brush pen are the same.

One of the main differences between these two pens is the ink type. The Zebra Fude Sign brush pen uses permanent pigment ink which is water resistant whereas the Zebra Funwari pen is water based.
This 4 piece brush pen set includes medium, fine, extra fine and Usu-Zumi gray ink. Great starter set for beginners.
Zebra Mildliner Brush Pen
The Zebra Mildliner Brush pen is a dual sided brush that features a large brush tip and a super fine bullet tip. This brush pen has a significantly larger downstroke than the Zebra Fude Sign medium brush tip.
The Zebra Mildliner has 15 different colors, but does not have a black version.
Zebra Metallic Brush Pen
The Zebra Metallic brush pens are a fun addition to your brush pen collection because they offer rich metallic colors that you can use on black paper.
